President Joe Biden has granted pardons to thousands of individuals convicted of simple marijuana possession under federal law, according to multiple reports.

The president has called on state governors to take similar action on the state-level. In an official statement, Biden states that “no one should be in a Federal prison solely due to the possession of marijuana, no one should be in a local jail or state prison for that reason, either. ”

Additionally, Biden has also charged the Department of Health and Human Services to reevaluate the classification of marijuana as a Schedule I drug.

This move is the largest step taken by any administration thus far to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.
