CBS News Reports Luke Scarmazzo , the final known Californian imprisoned for federal medical cannabis charges has been released after serving 15 of a 20-year sentence.
After opening a medical dispensary in 2004 with his business partner in the Bay Area, Scarmazzo was charged with possession and distribution of cannabis, which holds a minimum sentence of 20-years.
Under former President Trump, Scarmazzo was considered for clemency, but was passed over shortly before current President Biden’s inauguration.
Since his release, Scarmazzo calls for cannabis to be made legal federally, saying “I don’t want any more sons or daughters to lose a parent or son or daughter to a non-violent cannabis offense. It’s not right, it’s an injustice that continues to happen today.”
