Common Sizes and Measurements when Purchasing Marijuana

While many cannabis consumers can look at a menu and know exactly how much flower they’d like to order it may not be common knowledge for everyone. When buying marijuana flower, consumers will typically be purchasing by the gram or by the ounce. If you hear a dispensary employee reference an “eighth”, “quarter”, “half”, or “full” they are referencing measurements in ounces. An “eighth” refers to an eighth of an ounce or 3.5 grams. These are the measurements most consumers will find when looking at a dispensary menu for flower. If you are buying pre-rolled joints at a dispensary, the most common sizes are one gram and half gram.

Consumers new to cannabis likely don’t need to purchase more than an eighth of flower when they visit the dispensary but there are typically price breaks the more you buy. For example, flower that is listed at $12 for one gram could also be $70 if you buy a quarter of an ounce, bringing the price per gram down to $10. While it’s always a good idea to try and save money when you can, marijuana does lose potency over time.

If you’re wondering how much marijuana flower you should purchase, take a look at the photos below to help guide your decision.

One Gram of Marijuana Flower

A gram is typically the lowest size or measurement of marijuana available to purchase at dispensaries. If you’re looking to try a new strain of just want to sample something different, a gram is the perfect option. Depending upon your smoking method, a gram could yield two to three joints or three to five bowl packs.

A Quarter of an Ounce of Marijuana Flower

A quarter of an ounce, or approximately 7 grams of flower is typically the sweet spot for most recreational cannabis users. A decent price break from the single gram price and not too much of the same flower that you get tired of it.

A Half Ounce of Marijuana Flower

A half ounce, or 14 grams of flower is a pretty significant amount of flower. Depending upon how dense the buds are, you are likely looking at a half to near full, clear plastic sandwich bag. If you’re buying a half ounce of marijuana flower for yourself, its probably best to see the flower first or have tried it before, you don’t want to get stuck with 14 grams of flower you’re not crazy about.

An Ounce of Marijuana Flower

An ounce of marijuana, or 28 grams is typically the most amount of marijuana flower a recreational user can purchase at one time. In some states, medical patients may purchase up to four ounces of marijuana flower in a single visit and possess even more in their homes. An ounce of cannabis is also commonly referred to as a “zip of weed”, “zip” referencing the Ziploc branded bags that marijuana was commonly sold in.

While dispensaries may not sell marijuana to consumers in quantities over an ounce, farms and cultivators may sell by the pound or kilogram to dispensaries.
