What is Caryophyllene?
Caryophyllene is a terpene present in a number of herbs and spices and these aromas can be found in cannabis strains containing levels of caryophyllene. Recognizable scents include black pepper, basil, oregano, cinnamon and cloves. Cannabis strains with significant levels of caryophyllene have been described as possessing a spicy profile with prominent notes of diesel.

Caryophyllene is a unique terpene as it is able to activate CB2 receptors throughout one’s body. Similar to CBD, caryophyllene can eliminate pain, reduce inflammation and aid in the reduction of stress. By binding to CB2 receptors, caryophyllene does not cause the euphoric feelings that are typical when THC binds to CB1 receptors found in the brain. By attaching to CB2 receptors, caryophyllene can produce similar effects seen with CBD like reducing inflammation. Caryophyllene is the only terpene that has been shown to directly influence the endocannabinoid system.
Medicinal Benefits of Caryophyllene
Currently, there is not enough research to claim that caryophyllene is a proven treatment for any medical condition by itself. Many of the caryophyllene studies published have used rodents for testing the medical benefits. As with many terpenes, caryophyllene has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. One study showed that caryophyllene aided in reducing alcohol intake suggesting it could be used to treat addiction in humans. Additional research has also shown that caryophyllene could be used to reduce gene stress and positively impact longevity.Cannabis Strains featuring Caryophyllene
Caryophyllene is present in several cannabis plants but rarely at such a level that would be effective at fighting a disease. Anyone researching caryophyllene as a method of treatment should consult with their physician to discuss appropriate dosing and methods of consumption. Below you’ll see a list of common cannabis strains with significant levels of caryophyllene.
